curriculum intent

The Modern Foreign Languages Department at SJHN aims to promote a love of languages among all students and enable them to communicate effectively with people from different cultures, developing an understanding of attitudes, customs and ways of life. Inspired by our mission to form Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, we encourage students to develop questioning minds as they explore language as a bridge between people and communities.

We aim for students to flourish as confident linguists by building strong foundations in vocabulary, grammar and communication skills in the target language. We believe every student is entitled and capable of learning a language, and that language learning deepens understanding of the world and develops essential transferable skills. The opportunity of learning another language helps to foster essential values such as open-mindedness, acceptance and tolerance; as well as learning a language, students develop their personality, learn to embrace diversity and improve their knowledge of their own mother tongue. Through this, students develop a thirst for knowledge and broaden their future opportunities and aspirations.

The study of languages also fosters open-mindedness, acceptance and tolerance, supporting students to develop as respectful global citizens. As they progress, they are encouraged to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries, embrace diversity and strengthen their understanding of their own language, supporting them to build kind hearts in their interactions with others.

Our aspirational curriculum supports developing students’ cultural capital and a hunger for justice by helping them recognise the value of different cultures and perspectives. Enrichment opportunities further nurture curiosity and a lifelong passion for language learning.

By leaving SJHN as confident and reflective linguists, students are equipped to communicate across cultures and recognise that being “made for greatness” extends beyond national borders.
