Curriculum Intent
The Media Studies Department at SJHN aims to enable all students to flourish through an inclusive, ambitious and aspirational curriculum rooted in our Catholic mission and commitment to developing Christ-centred pilgrims of hope. Through the study of contemporary and historical media products, industries and debates, students develop a thirst for knowledge and a deeper understanding of the ways in which media shapes culture, values, identities and beliefs. By applying the theoretical framework of media language, representation, media industries and audiences, students cultivate questioning minds, becoming critical thinkers who can analyse, evaluate and challenge the messages they encounter in an increasingly media-saturated world. Through engagement with diverse voices, perspectives and representations, students develop empathy and kind hearts, recognising the dignity and experiences of others while appreciating the richness of different communities and cultures. The curriculum encourages a hunger for justice by empowering students to challenge stereotypes, question inequality and reflect on issues of representation, fairness and social responsibility. Alongside becoming informed and reflective media consumers, students develop the creativity, technical expertise and confidence to produce their own media products, equipping them with valuable transferable skills for future study, employment and active participation in society. By leaving SJHN as creative, analytical and responsible young people, students are prepared to engage confidently with the wider world and contribute positively to their communities and society.
