Ex nihilo nihil fit’
Welcome from Miss Mohan– Head of Year 8
Hello and welcome!
I am delighted to welcome our Year 8 students and their families to another exciting year at St John Henry Newman Catholic School.
Looking back on last year, I couldn't be prouder of everything our students achieved. They embraced the challenges of secondary school, formed strong friendships, and made fantastic progress both in and out of the classroom. It was a wonderful year, and we are excited to build on that success.
This year is particularly special as we begin this next chapter together in our brand-new school building. With new opportunities, new experiences, and a wonderful environment in which to learn, there is so much to look forward to.
As Head of Year 8, I am committed to ensuring every student feels happy, supported, and valued. We want our students to enjoy coming to school, feel proud of their achievements, and have the confidence to make the most of every opportunity that comes their way.
I am looking forward to working closely with our students, families, and staff to make this another successful and memorable year. Here's to a fantastic Year 8 together!

One of the things that makes Year 8 so special is the strong pastoral support our students receive every day. At the heart of this support is our dedicated team of form tutors, who know our students well and play a key role in helping them to thrive.
Students meet with their tutor each morning, providing a regular opportunity to check in, celebrate successes, and seek support when needed. As students continue their journey through Year 8, tutors help them develop independence, confidence, resilience, and a positive approach to school life.
For both students and families, the form tutor is usually the first point of contact for any questions, concerns, or support. Tutors work closely with me to ensure that every student feels valued, supported, and ready to achieve their potential.
We are incredibly proud of the relationships we build within our year group and the strong sense of belonging that our students experience. Together, we are committed to ensuring that every child has a happy, successful, and memorable Year 8.
Year 8 is a fantastic time for students to build on the experiences of Year 7 and become even more involved in school life. From football, netball, and trampolining to a wide range of clubs, activities, and enrichment opportunities, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Students are encouraged to take on positions of responsibility, including becoming tutor representatives, joining the student council, and contributing positively to the wider school community. These opportunities help students develop leadership skills, confidence, and a sense of responsibility, while making a real difference to the lives of others.
Getting involved beyond the classroom is a great way to develop new interests, build lasting friendships, and make the most of everything that St John Henry Newman Catholic School has to offer. We are proud of the enthusiasm and commitment shown by our Year 8 students and look forward to seeing them continue to grow and flourish throughout the year.
I am incredibly proud of everything our students achieved during Year 7. From the Bushcraft residential and our end-of-year bowling trip to receiving awards and representing our school at Masses and sporting events, they embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and maturity.
A particular highlight was seeing our football team reach the finals, alongside many students earning recognition for their excellent attendance, effort, and achievements throughout the year.
Above all, I am proud of how much our students have grown. They have become more confident, independent, and resilient young people who support one another and take pride in being part of the St John Henry Newman community.
As we begin Year 8 in our new school building, I am excited to see what they will achieve next and look forward to celebrating many more successes together.
The pastoral programme at St John Henry Newman Catholic School enables all students to develop Personally, Socially, Emotionally and Spiritually. During our tutor time each morning, all students will access their PSHE curriculum, participate in discussion based activities through out ‘Talking Points’, engage in continual reflection regarding their attendance and behaviour and have access to high quality careers information, advice and guidance.
At St John Henry Newman Catholic School, we are passionate about developing the whole child and ensuring that they are aware of the wider world around them. Our pastoral programme is designed in a manner that deepens our students understanding of how to keep themselves safe not only emotionally and physically but also virtually.
Our students complete work in their pastoral books, which allows them to keep a record of all the important topics they cover and also refer back to it when they complete their PSHE assessments.
For me, what makes Year 8 so special is seeing just how much our students have grown. It feels like only yesterday they were arriving for their first days of secondary school, and now they are confident, familiar faces around school who are ready to take on new challenges and opportunities.
Year 8 is a year where students really begin to find their feet. They grow in confidence, become more independent, strengthen their friendships, and start to develop a real sense of who they are. Having shared so many successes together in Year 7, there is a genuine sense of belonging and community within the year group that makes it a pleasure to be part of.
I am incredibly proud of our students and the kindness, resilience, and enthusiasm they bring to school each day. Whether they are achieving in the classroom, representing the school in sport, supporting one another, or simply giving their best, they continue to impress us.
As we begin this exciting new chapter in our new school building, I cannot wait to see what they accomplish next. Year 8 is full of potential, and I know there are many more successes and memories ahead for this fantastic group of young people.
As we begin Year 8, there is so much to look forward to. This year is all about building on the success of Year 7, growing in confidence, and making the most of the many opportunities available both in and outside the classroom.
Students will continue to develop their independence, resilience, and teamwork skills while exploring new interests, taking on greater responsibility, and challenging themselves to achieve their personal best. There will be opportunities to take part in trips, enrichment activities, sporting events, leadership roles, and whole-school celebrations throughout the year.
With the excitement of learning in our new school building and the strong foundations already established in Year 7, we are looking forward to another year filled with achievement, friendship, and memorable experiences. We cannot wait to see what our Year 8 students accomplish next.
As Head of Year *, my ambition for all students within my year group is…
As Head of Year 8, my ambition is for every student to continue growing into the confident, kind, and resilient young person I know they can be. Having already achieved so much during Year 7, I want our students to believe in themselves, embrace new opportunities, and be proud of all they accomplish both in and out of the classroom.
Most importantly, I want every child to feel happy, supported, and valued. Year 8 is a chance to build on strong friendships, develop greater independence, and create even more wonderful memories. I am incredibly proud of our year group and look forward to seeing each student flourish as they continue their journey at St John Henry Newman Catholic School.
