Beyond the Classroom: Opportunities to Grow, Belong and Achieve
At St John Henry Newman Catholic School, our mission, “Knowledge through the light of faith”, guides our commitment to providing an education that nurtures every aspect of a student's development.
We believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. Alongside academic achievement, we are committed to supporting the spiritual, moral, social, cultural and physical development of our students, helping them discover their talents, build confidence and develop a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
Our extracurricular and social time provision offers students opportunities to explore new interests, build positive relationships and develop valuable life skills in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Through participation, students are encouraged to:
-
Discover and develop new interests, skills and talents through a variety of creative, academic, sporting and recreational activities.
-
Build confidence, resilience and teamwork by embracing new challenges and working collaboratively.
-
Develop positive relationships with peers and staff across different year groups.
-
Support their physical and emotional wellbeing through active participation, creativity and positive social interaction.
-
Demonstrate leadership, service and responsibility by contributing positively to the wider school community.
We encourage all students to become involved, regardless of their age, ability or previous experience. Whether participating in a sports team, joining a music group, enjoying a board game or contributing to our Chaplaincy activities, there are opportunities for everyone to feel included and valued.
Extra-Curricular Clubs and Activities
Our extracurricular programme offers a growing range of activities during lunchtimes and after school. The programme is reviewed each half-term to reflect student interests, staff availability and opportunities for further development.
Our current provision includes:
Creative and Performing Arts
Students can explore their creativity and develop their artistic abilities through School Choir, KS3 Band, GCSE Music, Drama and K-pop Club. These opportunities encourage self-expression, collaboration and confidence, while providing students with opportunities to develop their interests beyond their timetabled lessons.
Sport and Physical Activity
Our sporting provision includes Boys' Football, Girls' Football, Girls' Netball, Rugby, Badminton and Weight Training. These activities promote physical wellbeing, teamwork, perseverance and positive competition, offering students opportunities to participate and improve their skills.
Games, Hobbies and Social Activities
Board Games, Chess and Anime Club provide opportunities for students to connect with others who share similar interests. These clubs encourage problem-solving, creativity, communication and the development of positive friendships.
Faith, Community and Personal Development
Our Chaplaincy and Peace & Justice activities provide opportunities for students to explore their faith, reflect on important social issues and actively contribute to the life of the school community.
Rooted in our Catholic ethos, these activities encourage compassion, mutual respect, service and a sense of responsibility towards others.
Wellbeing and Academic Support
Our Mindfulness and Wellbeing activities provide opportunities for students to take time for reflection and support their emotional wellbeing.
Additional academic support, including GCSE PE Intervention, is available to help students develop their knowledge, confidence and understanding beyond regular classroom lessons.
Extra-Curricular Timetable – Autumn Term 2026
Our extra-curricular programme operates across a Week A and Week B timetable, with activities available during lunchtime and after school.
Students are encouraged to explore the opportunities available and participate in activities that interest them.

Please note that the timetable is subject to change depending on staffing, availability and school commitments. Students should check the weekly student bulletin and school noticeboards for the latest information.
Social Time Activities
At St John Henry Newman Catholic School, we recognise that break and lunchtime are important opportunities for students to relax, socialise and develop positive relationships.
Our social time provision aims to offer a balance of active, recreational and quieter spaces, ensuring students have opportunities to engage in activities that suit their interests and individual needs.
The programme celebrates a variety of talents and abilities, encouraging students to represent their tutor groups positively and contribute towards a shared sense of achievement.
Stay Involved
Our extracurricular and social time provision continues to develop throughout the academic year, with activities reviewed and updated each half-term.
Students and parents are encouraged to check the school website, student bulletin and school noticeboards for the latest timetables, activities and opportunities.
