‘Ex nihilo nihil fit’
Welcome to Year 11 at St John Henry Newman Catholic School
A very warm welcome to Year 11. My name is Mr McLintock, and I have the privilege of leading Year 11 through this pivotal stage of their journey at St John Henry Newman Catholic School. Year 11 is a year of focus, ambition and opportunity, where students consolidate their learning, grow in independence and prepare for the exciting next chapter of their lives.
At the heart of our year group is a dedicated and committed team of tutors who play a vital role in supporting students both academically and personally. They provide the first layer of pastoral care each morning, ensuring that every student feels supported, valued and challenged to reach their full potential. Working alongside the wider pastoral team, our tutors help students navigate the challenges of Year 11 with confidence, resilience and determination.

Our year group is also supported by Mr McDonnell and Mr Abbott, who provide leadership links for Year 11, alongside our supporting staff, Mr Wells, Mr Hedge and Mrs Isherwood. Together, this team works collaboratively to promote high standards, provide effective pastoral support and ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Beyond the classroom, Year 11 students are encouraged to engage with a wide range of extracurricular activities, from sports and music to faith-based groups and student leadership opportunities. Through our prefect system, student council and opportunities to act as role models for younger students, we encourage everyone to contribute positively to our school community. These experiences help develop important life skills, including teamwork, communication, responsibility and resilience.
Last year, as Year 10 students, this cohort experienced the challenge of completing their first GCSE in English Language. They approached this milestone with maturity and determination, and their hard work was reflected in some excellent results. This achievement has provided them with valuable examination experience, helping them understand what is required to succeed at GCSE level. As they move into Year 11, we will build upon this foundation, encouraging every student to maintain high expectations, recognise their potential and strive for even greater success.
The pastoral programme at St John Henry Newman Catholic School enables all students to develop personally, socially, emotionally and spiritually. During morning tutor time, students access their PSHE curriculum, participate in discussion-based activities through our Talking Points, reflect on their attendance and behaviour, and receive high-quality careers information, advice and guidance. This programme supports students in becoming responsible, confident young adults who are prepared for the opportunities and challenges ahead.
At St John Henry Newman Catholic School, we are passionate about developing the whole child and ensuring that students understand the wider world around them. Our pastoral programme deepens their understanding of how to keep themselves safe emotionally, physically and online. Students record their learning in pastoral books, allowing them to revisit important topics and reflect on their personal development.
In Year 11, tutor time also provides opportunities for targeted intervention, revision support, examination preparation and mentoring. Alongside this, Period 6 attendance is a vital part of our intervention strategy, providing students with additional subject-specific guidance and support as they prepare for their GCSEs. We expect students to approach these opportunities with commitment and purpose, recognising that consistent attendance, effective revision and a positive attitude to learning are essential to achieving their potential.
Year 11 is defined by determination, resilience and a commitment to excellence. Our school motto, Ex Nihilo Nihil Fit — Nothing comes from nothing — underpins everything we do. It serves as a daily reminder that effort, perseverance and hard work are the foundations of success. We want our students to understand that their choices, attitudes and actions throughout this year will make a difference. By supporting one another, embracing challenges and taking responsibility for their learning, they can achieve their personal best.
The year ahead is one of great importance. Students will complete their GCSE examinations while making key decisions about their futures, whether that involves Sixth Form, college, apprenticeships or another pathway. Alongside academic preparation, we will focus on developing confidence, independence and ambition, ensuring that students are equipped to make informed decisions about their next steps and are prepared for life beyond St John Henry Newman.
As Head of Year 11, my ambition is for every student to leave St John Henry Newman Catholic School with a genuine sense of pride in who they are, what they have achieved and the person they have become. I want every student to recognise that success is built through resilience, hard work, positive choices and the support of those around them. With the commitment of our students, the dedication of our staff and the support of our families, I am confident that this year group can achieve great things and take their next steps with confidence, purpose and hope.
