curriculum intent
The Art and Photography Department at SJHN aims to develop students’ creativity, imagination and technical skill through an ambitious and engaging curriculum. Inspired by our mission to form Christ-centred pilgrims of hope, we encourage students to develop questioning minds as they explore the visual world and express ideas with confidence and originality.
We aim for students to flourish as creative individuals by following national curriculum guidelines that ensure all pupils produce creative work, explore ideas and record their experiences. Students develop a thirst for knowledge as they experiment with a wide range of materials, techniques and processes in both art and photography.
The curriculum enables students to become proficient in artistic skills while learning to evaluate and analyse creative work. They also develop an understanding of the historical and cultural development of art forms, supporting them to make informed and meaningful creative choices.
We aim to ensure every student has the opportunity to explore their own creativity and abilities, building confidence through practical, hands-on learning. This supports the development of kind hearts, as students learn to appreciate different perspectives and express personal meaning through their work.
Additionally, we seek to develop students’ cultural capital and a hunger for justice, encouraging them to reflect on how art and imagery can communicate ideas, challenge perceptions and represent society.
By leaving SJHN as confident, reflective and expressive artists and photographers, students are equipped with the skills to communicate creatively, evaluate visual culture and succeed in further study and creative careers.
