Curriculum Intent

The Religious Education Department at SJHN aims to enable all students to flourish in the fullness of life through a curriculum rooted in our mission of forming Christ-centred pilgrims of hope. Inspired by the belief that every person is made in the image and likeness of God and is “Made for Greatness”. We nurture kind hearts through the study of scripture, Church teaching and lived experience, encouraging students to recognise the dignity of every person and respond compassionately to the needs of others. As a rigorous academic discipline and a process of personal formation, Religious Education develops secure theological understanding and a thirst for knowledge, enabling students to engage deeply with questions of faith, meaning and purpose. Through opportunities for reflection, dialogue and critical engagement with religious, moral and ethical issues, students develop questioning minds, learning to think critically, articulate their beliefs with confidence and engage respectfully with diverse perspectives. Grounded in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, students are encouraged to develop a hunger for justice, recognising their responsibility to work for the common good, care for creation and contribute positively to society. Through their study of theology and their encounter with Christ, students grow in spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness, discerning their vocation and strengthening their sense of identity, belonging and purpose. By leaving SJHN as knowledgeable, reflective and compassionate young people, students are equipped to live lives of faith, hope, service and justice.
